other services :: digital intermediates/film out ::

Cinefilm has developed a new service for economical Digital Intermediates (DI) to 35mm Film Outs using an HD/ DI format. The costs of a 2K scan of selected scenes can average .15 per frame or over $24,000 for input before you begin color correction. With an aperture of 1.85 on most films, your actual picture resolution would be about 2000x1082. Since HD is 1920x1080, the amount of added detail is not that great over standard HD.

Work Flow

Once you have picture lock on your final edit, using your offline EDL, we put the original film back on the Spirit and input your selects with the daVinci 2K direct to an HD drive array in uncompressed 10 bit HD 4:4:4 format.  Those scenes are relinked in Final Cut Pro HD and conformed at full HD resolution. Final color correction is made in a digital theater with a 10,000:1 contrast ratio at full 1920x1080 resolution. Apple Color is used for real-time color changes. Any edit effects will be re-rendered along with titles in High Definition.

The film is then cut into 20 minute segments with Academy leader for output in 35mm film reels. The elements are transferred via FW drive direct into a 4K Image for 35mm output. There is NO HD TAPE COMPRESSION before your HD data is transformed into 35mm negative. (HD SR tape adds 4:1 compression.)

Budget Estimates

The color correct of final scenes will depend on your project. Allow for 20-40 hours for color correction. Average costs about $20-25,000 for a color corrected master.

For feature length film outs, budget at $400 per minute of 35mm film. There is a one time set up fee of $500 for prep and reel breaks. This price includes the original negative, answer print, and a digital sound track (additional fees apply for Dolby encoded tracks).
